What Is An Experiential Astrology Session?

The Ten Bulls of Zen

The Rave

I have gotten through my blogging yips for now. Today I am bursting at the seams to write. The inspiration comes from doing more and more Experiential Astrology Sessions. I guess the big question is – What is an Experiential Astrology Session? Here goes.

People are arriving at my door, not so much with a desire to fill their inner hard-drive with a heap of astrological information but rather with a sincere need/passion/hunger to sort out various issues in their lives. Usually these are related to work (creativity), relationships of all kinds and existential angst (the meaning or significance of this mysterious life).

Once presented with an issue, we can move in a variety of different ways. The simplest is to take what appear to be the archetypal characters most aligned to the issue (the relevant signs, planets, houses from the birth chart) and lay them out on a couple of cushions on the floor. For example the issue may be relationship, so we pick Venus and Mars. At this point I lay out three cushions, or chairs. One is for the person’s normal garden variety self and the others are for each of the planets. (Venus and Mars). Then we start exploring.

Essentially the process is like Gestalt or Voice Dialogue, or Psychodrama. I get the person to sit on the cushions one at a time and explore what it feels like to be that unconscious part represented by our example planets, Venus, or Mars. This is a slow, in depth journey of energy, feeling and insight that brings to light what resistances might be there, what resources might be there and what bearing this resource, or resistance has on the issue presented. That alone is often revelatory. The part on the second cushion is often very different from the first, and has a completely different often contradictory perspective on the presented issue.

Having identified both, we then come back to the middle and check to see how it feels to have these energies bubbling away on the inside. The process from here on in is two-fold. The first step is therapeutic. It is all about learning to love what we have found so far. This happens always and spontaneously as a result of investigating the effects of not loving each part. Once that is seen, acknowledgement and acceptance follows like night follows day.

The second step is the meditative step. This can happen in a few different ways depending on the person’s type, present space and lord knows what else. It can happen by bringing all that we have found so far into the heart. It can happen by simply finding the balance or the mid-point between the two parts. It can happen by holding the paradox.  It can happen by peeling away the different parts and discovering that none of them are actually who we are – by dis-identifying. There are all sorts of things that can happen at this point but they all involve centring in one way or another.

So – in this way Astrology works as a way to ease the conflict of the presenting issue and as a way to use the presenting issue as a path to centring, meditation, witnessing. How good is that? And how much fun is that?

There are other ways to do the same thing in a session. We can find the opposing threads within one archetypal energy, (e.g. the love and the hate inside Venus) or we can lay out whole slabs of the birth chart in a circle on the floor and walk through the various flows and obstacles that make it unique. The methodology is basically similar, though the physical approach may be different. Step one – acceptance, acknowledgement, self-love – and step two, witnessing, meditation.

The beauty of this approach is that it is an experience as opposed to a Birth Chart Reading which is really only an intellectual exercise no matter which way you look at it. This means that an Experiential Astrology Session can actually change us, not just inform us. Also, and perhaps the most amazing thing, is that it leads to the person coming for the session finding the resources within required to sort out their own dilemma’s. The symbols of Astrology hold within themselves, all sorts of positive, transformative possibilities. An Experiential session is fundamentally client-based and therefore empowering. My job is to direct traffic, not to impart knowledge or advice in any way.

I am having a blast with this stuff and would love more people to take a punt and come for the journey. I am presently in Brisbane, which makes me very available for SEQ locals – but I am available to travel anywhere there is interest, a grounded and friendly organiser and sufficient need. Talk to me!

Today’s Pitch

Lion Island is playing in the Brunswick Valley Mall (Brisbane) this Saturday 6th Feb for free. 12pm will be an acoustic set – and at 1pm the whole band will crank up. Be there or be square! We’re also part of the whole Brisbane Sounds thing. Heaps of local bands. Compilation CD is out. Big Gig at the Zoo Feb 27th

“Astrology for Those Who Won’t Admit They’re Interested” is now available in good bookshops around Australia – and at www.boolarongpress.com.au and www.amazon.com

Subscribe to this Blog. The details are below to the right of your screen. By e-mail or RSS.

And now for some – Raving On

It’s a little cooler. The birds are gossiping where they would have been laying low a week ago. I have a slight belly ache. Maybe it’s the fumes from an enzyme cleaner I used to polish the bathroom with a little earlier. It’s Aquarius time – which means it’s time to brush up on the myth of Prometheus. It’s a good story to help get one’s head around Water-bearers. Liz Greenes call. I like it. The rebel steals fire from the gods to bring humanity out of darkness. He creates civilization and also inadvertently unleashes havoc at the same time. Pandora is involved. Innovation asks a lot of a person. Are you ready to be shunned? That’s as likely as to be worshipped. Are you aware of all the potential consequences of your actions? Einstein wasn’t. Are you being humanitarian with awareness or not? That’s the basic question – as it always seems to be. All patterns to be witnessed.

I am considering running some on-going Astrology evenings in Brisbane – with an eye to them perhaps doubling as an Astrology Course. If you are in this neck of the woods and are interested, let me know. My e-mail address is below. .

Thoughts and Songs Compiled

Posted in Astrology, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on December 14, 2009 by sudhirastropoetica

It’s a dirty hot Queensland night. Finally the mosquitoes have joined in the party, after having been strangely absent for the early part of summer. Soon I will go and hide in my mosquito net and ponder sleep, as I perspire and roll around wrestling with this hot December night. It’s ‘Take a good look at this moment and see what you see’ night. So, what do I see? My book is out and doing it’s mysterious business, quietly and hopefully fruitfully. I can hear it slipping off bookshop shelves into paper bags. I can hear it moving off it’s pallet at the book making factory and slipping into postbags and flying off to places unknown. I have now decided that I like the songs I have up at  www.sudhir.bandcamp.com  The act of making a compilation has rescued them and me from a certain ambivalence. Now I’m not ambivalent at all. It’s clear, I like them. They are what they are. Nothing more and nothing less. The band has played it’s second last gig for the year. We’re on at Rics on New Year’s eve if you happen to be in Brisbane. That will be fun. New PA. New stage. We might even fit on. We’ve been contemplating the next move there. Looks like it might be an album. We shall see. I have been doing plenty of Astrology Readings of late. Mostly for folks in WA or Italy. Mostly they are a journey into the incredible relevancy of mythology via a tour of the planets. That plus a whole huge angle on meditation and psychology that comes from 32 years with Osho. Yep – 32 years last Friday. Happy Birthday Sudhir. I have no idea who is reading this thing – but I love a free form place to write. A place where all the bits and pieces that stick out the edges of the stars and get binned can star in their own right. Love and fun to you all whoever you are xxx

A Book Signing, Lions and the Big Smoke

Posted in Astrology, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on November 26, 2009 by sudhirastropoetica

This week is my first ever book signing. It is at Mary Ryans in Milton (Brisbane) from 11am on this Saturday November 28th. Get yourself down there. I’ll be practising the art of my signature and short written one-liners all day today.

Getting a book out and about in the world is quite an adventure. Having just done a massive mail-out to all the ex-subscribers of my ex-website, and having delivered all the clues of bookshops I know around this country to my publisher I now feel like a fisherman who has cast his line and now gets to wait – whilst telling tall stories to whoever will listen. All the details about how to buy the book, wherever you are around the globe, are below in this blog.

I am intrigued by the relationship of Astrology to the place of No-mind, Zen, Dhyan, Witnessing, whatever you want to call it, that is at the very heart of my quest. Astrology is a description of the wheel and how to navigate it. Witnessing is the hub. Astrology only works for me when it is an aid to resting at the centre of the wheel. It seems that there is a way to use astrology so that it becomes a working description of the nature of the wheel, an opportunity to make peace with one’s foibles, and hence have an easy passage to the miracle of centering. Without the wheel there would be no sense of what the centre could be. Without the centre, the wheel wouldn’t exist. To define a genuinely holistic version of the stars in this lifetime seems to be one of my tasks. Finally I really feel like taking it on. Then there is of course also the band…..

I just got back from playing with Lion Island in the Grand Finals of the Tooheys Uncharted competition. 2,000 bands entered and we made it to the last three. That’s pretty damn amazing. I am glad we didn’t win. I could see a potential pact with the devil looming there. We did however have a great time playing at The Annandale Hotel using fantastic equipment, in front of a bunch of music industry personages. It is always so much fun to play. Definitely one of our best gigs. There is a recording of it in existence. Who knows it might make it into circulation. I’ve only heard little bits but it sounded pretty good.

We travelled well. Airports and taxi transfers and hotel rooms and lots of luggage and eight fellow lions to yabber on to at all hours of the day and night in the big smoke of Sydney. If this becomes a lifestyle it could become a source of much writing. Lord knows what it will do to my stars. It’s not all glory that’s for sure. Fun nevertheless. And what a blast to get to play this wild and wonderful music in a great band in my pre-dotage years.

We are playing three gigs in three days this weekend if you happen to be in Brisvegas. Friday night supporting The Gin Club at The Zoo (We’re on at 8.50), Saturday Night at The Troubadour, not sure what time we are on (Check out The Troubadour website) and at 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon in the park behind the Ithaca swimming pool in Paddington (Opposite Suncorp Stadium). Be there.

Under a Bright Orange Sky

Posted in Astrology, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on September 23, 2009 by sudhirastropoetica

A lot happens in 24 hours. There has been a dust storm in the sky today that turned it orange. Seriously strange. Yesterday at Lion Island music practise I heard we had been offered a gig by The Harbour Agency which is pretty amazing. They are big bananas. Looks like we are off up the mountain to Toowoomba later in October. And all while somehow mulling over the symbol of Leo. I would love to simplify astrology and do surgery on the superstition it is riddled with. An astrology software salesperson sent me an e-mail yesterday claiming that a certain person’s transits proved that they were an axe murderer, even though they were adjudged innocent. This is idiocy. What’s worse is that when I pointed out that it was a rather long bow to draw, he had no sense whatsoever of the irony. I choose to persist with the soothsaying anyway. I look forward to my book getting out and about on the streets, coffee tables and bookshelves of the world, so I can finally have my angle circulating through the collective unconscious.

My Book is due out soon. Watch this space! Yes – I am available for sessions. Yes – I am available to run workshops and give talks. And my songs are now up at Bandcamp. Check the links on this site. I can be contacted at astropoetica@gmail.com

Enjoy!

Songs, Virgo and Queen Victoria’s Petticoats

Posted in Astrology, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on September 22, 2009 by sudhirastropoetica

Yesterday I put a compilation of my songs up at Bandcamp. Finally a website elegantly designed for independent artists to sell their stuff without getting tangled in other peoples musically mercinary business adventures. Go to the links on this blog and you’ll see what I mean. It’s refreshingly simple. Enjoy!

On the astrological front I am going to keep bringing these blogs back to the themes of the month – and for now that means Virgo. The original Goddess represented the order of nature. I could contemplate that forever. She can be seen in the spine of a leaf, heard in the rustle of the morning trees, felt in the spring heat. And what is in her way are all the ludicrous ideas about what is right and wrong that have been layered on top of her. The primal virgin has got more petticoats, dresses, hats and corset on than Queen Victoria. She is the very nature that runs through our veins. She needs to be disrobed. That means undressing the real me from his conditioning. Dancing seems to help. The body likes to move. The armour cracks and falls off when dancing freely. Slowly day by day a little bit more hits the dust. Natacha Atlas and Arabic rhythms seem to work for me. Oh and Shooglenifty.

My Book is due out soon. Watch this space! And – Yes – I am available for sessions. Yes – I am available to run workshops and give talks. I can be contacted at astropoetica@gmail.com

Enjoy!
