Astrology, Narrative and Pronoia

It’s been a long time between drinks, which seems to have become the case as I have been making my way through the land of academia for these last three years. The good news is that in approximately three and a bit months I will have a counselling degree. Aside from giving me some extra street cred, it has certainly rounded and strengthened and deepened my approach to counselling. It’s also brought me in touch with some fantastic new approaches to counselling in the form of narrative therapy and existential counselling, as articulated by Amy Van Deurzen. I’m sure there will be more to do with those two subjects as this next round of blogs arise. Adding solid counselling skills to astrology is a passion of mine. I guess that comes from having done way too many sessions in the past to help people recover from having had astrology sessions. Superstition is not the way to encourage people to trust life and empower themselves oh overly predictive friends of mine.

My conception of astrology is rightfully morphing, changing and growing, in a lovely protean, creative fashion. Astrology is if nothing else a glorious web of stories, hiding within the enigmatic surface of a set of ancient symbols. These stories, often with their roots in Greek mythology, but not always, are ways of identifying and defining our own story lines. By identifying our story lines we can start to figure out where they reinforce who we are and where they get in the way. If they are getting in our way, then our job is to find the alternative, hidden seam of experiences and narratives, that may serve to empower and awaken us. This is the work of narrative therapy. To identify and begin to perform the threads of narrative that can lead us where we want to go. It is to get out of the thrall of the stories we carry in our hearts that keep us chained.

Which brings me to Pronoia. Pronoia is a word picked up and extended on by fellow maverick astrologer Rob Brezsny. In fact he has turned it into a book which I am reading right now. Pronoia is the antidote for paranoia. It is not blind, Christianity-in-drag, new ageism. It is a way of looking at what’s going on in the world that acknowledges reality, while hunting for and threading together all the beautiful, life affirmative things that are happening before our eyes – that we miss seeing because we are so stuck in collective negative dross. I thoroughly recommend checking him out. He’s got his own way of telling his tale, which may or may not sit well with you – but he really does have a fine tale to tell – so bear with him. Anyone that quotes Hafiz as freely as he does is all right by me.

On a practical note, I still have books for sale. They are $20, Australian with free postage anywhere in the world. You can pay using paypal. I am available for Skype sessions wherever you are in the world. I charge $100 Australian (you get a session, a recording of the session and a copy of my book for that – as long as stocks remain). Contact me here through wordpress or by e-mail (astropoetica@gmail.com). If you are in Brisbane, or close by, I can come and do group sessions with you and your buddies whenever you want. Feel free to get in touch.

Much love and fun – and lots of good will and wishes for 2014. It feels like it will be a good one to me.

In the Mood for doing Astrology Sessions!

Posted in Astrology, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on November 9, 2010 by sudhirastropoetica

Diana, Artemis - The Moon

I’m in the mood for doing Astrology Sessions. Why?

In western culture it has been historically assumed that if one has a genuine existential crisis, where one’s ego blows out at 300 kilometres an hour on the open road, the only real options are to self-destruct – usually via madness or suicide (slow or fast) – or to deny ones feelings in the form of orthodox belief. In the east there has always been a third option. It has been part of the culture for thousands of years – and that option is to dance on the table. The lie is gone and now the truth can come. Yahoo!

Our egos are bound to fail. They are false. All that we have learned to be, simply must fail – in love, creativity and in coming to terms with death. It has to fail because it’s got no realness in it whatsoever. It is simply impossible to love, create or know, with an identity that has been built to serve society. And our egos can be spectacularly sophisticated. In fact it takes a fantastically sophisticated ego to come fully unstuck. What greater hubris is there than to think that one can love, that one can create – and that one is immortal? This failure is inevitable. It is why depression is the greatest disease of modern man – and it need not be the end of the story.

Imagine if one could keep one’s crap detector alive as one’s ego failed, not slip into the addictive haze of belief, not dull ones senses with substances or processes, resist the urge to go nuts – and instead stare into the abyss with eyes open? Those who have done so have invariably found that this conscious death of the ego is a doorway into bliss – and, paradoxically – fullness.

This is why I am in the mood to give sessions. The greatest gift I have been given in this life is a sniff of this bliss – which comes as the ego burns up in the flames of its own falsity. And now I am possessed by the notion that this experience needs to be shared. What to do?

The culture needs it. We all need it – in love, work and in living.

So, now, let me describe the things I do, in this context.

I’m in the mood for doing some astrology sessions. What?  and   How?

I offer Astrology Sessions both face to face and via MP3 anywhere else around the globe.

Astrology has become my tool for story-telling the transformational journey. Astrology is a perfect medium to do the job. It is after all a repository of stories that has roots that go back to antiquity. It is a rich living web of metaphor that is flexible enough to grow, to be re-visioned.

I discovered at some point, largely by coming across the work of Milton Erikson, that story-telling is potentially deeply healing. An Astrology Reading is a perfect vehicle for shifting inner perspectives around to make way for a rebirth in that lovely pregnant moment when our ego comes unstuck. Planting the seed of story is a powerful means. In those moments of darkness, annihilation, deep feeling, that we all have, usually provoked by our relationships, work, encounters with authority, or brushes with mortality, a story can be the thread that keeps it real – that keeps it open – that prevents us from going down.

Experiential Astrology Sessions are a way of doing the same thing but in a more interactive and energetic way, using psychodrama, gestalt, voice dialogue body awareness and more to take it all a step deeper.

If you like this intent, connect with me. Get on the blower or on the net and book yourself in. I charge $70 AUS for a reading – wherever you are in the world – or $60 if you are in Brisbane or nearby and can come and see me. If you are in Australia you can pay by cash or direct deposit. If you are anywhere else, I do Paypal.

Putting it into the culture

I also send out Daily Astrological Weather Reports via Twitter (@SudhirAstrology) and Facebook (Sudhir Daily Astro), write columns for newspapers and websites (www.osho.com) and when I get the chance I play music. My book “Astrology; For Those Who Won’t Admit They’re Interested” is out and available around Australia, and on the web at www.boolarongpress.com.au It’s a great Christmas pressie option. Give one.

Much love and fun

A Book Signing, Lions and the Big Smoke

Posted in Astrology, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on November 26, 2009 by sudhirastropoetica

This week is my first ever book signing. It is at Mary Ryans in Milton (Brisbane) from 11am on this Saturday November 28th. Get yourself down there. I’ll be practising the art of my signature and short written one-liners all day today.

Getting a book out and about in the world is quite an adventure. Having just done a massive mail-out to all the ex-subscribers of my ex-website, and having delivered all the clues of bookshops I know around this country to my publisher I now feel like a fisherman who has cast his line and now gets to wait – whilst telling tall stories to whoever will listen. All the details about how to buy the book, wherever you are around the globe, are below in this blog.

I am intrigued by the relationship of Astrology to the place of No-mind, Zen, Dhyan, Witnessing, whatever you want to call it, that is at the very heart of my quest. Astrology is a description of the wheel and how to navigate it. Witnessing is the hub. Astrology only works for me when it is an aid to resting at the centre of the wheel. It seems that there is a way to use astrology so that it becomes a working description of the nature of the wheel, an opportunity to make peace with one’s foibles, and hence have an easy passage to the miracle of centering. Without the wheel there would be no sense of what the centre could be. Without the centre, the wheel wouldn’t exist. To define a genuinely holistic version of the stars in this lifetime seems to be one of my tasks. Finally I really feel like taking it on. Then there is of course also the band…..

I just got back from playing with Lion Island in the Grand Finals of the Tooheys Uncharted competition. 2,000 bands entered and we made it to the last three. That’s pretty damn amazing. I am glad we didn’t win. I could see a potential pact with the devil looming there. We did however have a great time playing at The Annandale Hotel using fantastic equipment, in front of a bunch of music industry personages. It is always so much fun to play. Definitely one of our best gigs. There is a recording of it in existence. Who knows it might make it into circulation. I’ve only heard little bits but it sounded pretty good.

We travelled well. Airports and taxi transfers and hotel rooms and lots of luggage and eight fellow lions to yabber on to at all hours of the day and night in the big smoke of Sydney. If this becomes a lifestyle it could become a source of much writing. Lord knows what it will do to my stars. It’s not all glory that’s for sure. Fun nevertheless. And what a blast to get to play this wild and wonderful music in a great band in my pre-dotage years.

We are playing three gigs in three days this weekend if you happen to be in Brisvegas. Friday night supporting The Gin Club at The Zoo (We’re on at 8.50), Saturday Night at The Troubadour, not sure what time we are on (Check out The Troubadour website) and at 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon in the park behind the Ithaca swimming pool in Paddington (Opposite Suncorp Stadium). Be there.

Avalon

It’s been a week for dancing with the demons of resistance. The moment it comes to writing – with the exception of those things that I have a paid deadline for (strangely) – or talking to my tape recorder about the stars, the little buggers have been there in all their glory. Resistance, digging it’s heels in with all the heavy hoofedness of a mighty Brahman bull. Or is it a particularly feisty crab who just simply doesn’t want to come out of his home under the rocks? That said it’s been an eventful few days. The band is getting ready for a gig at The Zoo, here in Brisbane, on Friday night. That’s a big one for us. A real venue. A real audience. The bats in the brain belfries definitely start to flap around in the face of facing the general public en masse. We’ll be splendid. I came across a cheap Grail Tarot deck on Saturday and snaffled it up. I have never really gotten my head around the Knights Templar before – or that the Gnostic Christian tradition was so tied up with the Grail myseries. I do remember staring over the Chalice well in Glastonbury years ago wondering if Joseph of Arimathea really did hide it in there. I remember a story that there’s some place thereabouts, that were you to spend a night there, you would come out mad or a poet. Tempting. Glastonbury really is an extraordinary part of the planet. The signs of the Zodiac are written into the hedges and creeks and fencelines so that they can be seen from the Tor near the centre of town. Are the twelve sign of the Zodiac the knights of the round table? Is Glastonbury Avalon? One certainly wonders when one sucks up that crisp clean magical air. Certainly takes your sense of wonder up a notch – which may well have been the secret intention.

Here’s a picture of the band
