Today I found myself walking at half pace behind my mother who is now 92. We were doing the shopping. It entered my head that Saturn is now in Libra, that my Sun is in Libra and that this was a perfect metaphor. Lovely misrepresented Saturn. He slows us down and makes us be with what is. If we are smart we go with it and discover the beaming white light of his existential wisdom. Considering that for the previous two days I had been travelling like a bat out of hell, this sudden slowness brought a smile to my eyes.

I played my first midnight gig with the band on Friday. We launched our EP. On the 2.05am bus home there were half a dozen young souls pawing over their brand new Lion Island CD’s. Another smiling moment. Two days of recovery later and I am trailing Saturn as he initiates me into the mysteries of old age. What a strange and fragile thing it is to become ancient. Walking fragile and incrementally through a shopping mall full of young fast people who don’t even seem to notice. One man did. An older man. He picked up something my mother dropped, with care, tenderness and understanding. channeling the intrinsic goodness of existence in the very midst of the most mundane part of the universe. Little things stagger me. And they are found by moving more slowly. My mother commented on how much more she sees now that she moves at her new found ninth decade pace. To be finding blessings at such a ripe old age is bordering on the miraculous.

My Book is way past its gestation time. It should be hot off the presses any day soon. I am available for sessions, to run workshops and give talks. Lion Island is to be found at http://www.myspace.com/lionisland and at Bandcamp.com. My solo songs are up at Bandcamp.com too.

Libra, War, Peace and a Cold Morning Breeze

Posted in Astrology, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , on October 8, 2009 by sudhirastropoetica

I’ve been focussing on the aspect of Libra that is about a love of beauty. For years I have been making the point that beauty involves understanding and accepting the balance of darkness and light. Though I still feel that to be true, it has taken me away from the perhaps deeper Libran theme of peace. And of course once one introduces the idea of peace one has to allow in the opposite – war. The Aries/Libra axis is really the axis of war and peace; in their shadow forms. Anger and fear. A peace that is just fear of anger is fey. And an anger that has no respect for peace is thuggery. The classic romantic idealist Libran is often deathly afraid of his or her more powerful emotions – and hence that romanticism is illusory. Life doesn’t abide it for long. Beauty has to be real, not just an escape from ugliness. It has to have the same power. In order to do that our Libran friends (I am one of them) must enter the gritty embrace of anger. Absorbing the power that comes with that. Adding Mars to the equation and not being just all Venus (though she is a mighty handful mythologically)

The day is splendid. Strangely cold. My banjo is off to the doctor again this morning. She is an antique attempting to make it in the contemporary world. The Lion Island EP launch is on October 16. We are playing at midnight – which means my previously simple lifestyle has now officially gone arse up.

My Book is due out soon; in fact i’m expecting it any day. I am available for sessions. I am available to run workshops and give talks. My songs are now up at Bandcamp, LastFM and more. Lion Island is to be found on Bandcamp too. Check the links on this site.

Old Crow Medicine Show, Justice and Insects

Posted in Astrology, Music with tags , , , , on October 2, 2009 by sudhirastropoetica

The Old Crow Medicine Show are playing in my ear. Crisp clean clear edgy contemporary bluegrass. I love the juxtaposition of my love of country music and astrology. One grounds. The other makes me rise high. Which one does which is anyone’s guess. The day is hot. The insects are singing a lament. Their noxious weed Chinese Elm homes were felled yesterday. The house looks and feels naked. Exposed to the summer sun.

I’ve been focussing on the issue of beauty with Libra. Today I suspect i’ve been doing a classic Libran thing and have been making it nice. Even though the aesthetic angle is all about real beauty as opposed to romantic beauty to me. There is the issue of justice though. The inanimate scales pointing to a non-instinctive, considered, rational, conscience, or consciousness driven justice. Justice. Punishment. Do crime in the name of curing the crime. State crime is ok. Individual crime is problematic. The scorpion’s claws still lie there under the pans of the blindfolded goddesses justice. The wolf behind the sheep. The shadow behind the gloss of civilisation. No solutions today. Just descriptions. The weekend promises celebration, music and a big fat old moon. The Crows keep exploring counterpoint, rhythm, harmonies and melody. The insects are growing lazy with their song in the afternoon heat.

My Book is due out soon. Watch this space! Yes – I am available for sessions. Yes – I am available to run workshops and give talks. And my songs are now up at Bandcamp, LastFM and more.. Check the links on this site. I can be contacted at astropoetica@gmail.com

Morphing Images of Justice

Finally the dust has cleared. There are beautiful clear skies here and an unseasonal crispness in the air. The Sun is well and truly in Libra by now. Every month I scour the net for images to line up with the myths and themes of the sign we are in. I’m building up an interesting collection. I found this amazing old image of the goddess of justice (above) in my travels. She is primitive and earthy – not airy at all. It seems the symbol of the scales evolved from the claws of the scorpion (the chelae), through the form of an earthy goddess who represented the order of nature (more akin to Virgo), to the blindfolded damsel we now see outside our high courts. As she is now, she is a celebration of the evolution of the jury system – where justice is in the hands of the common people. I am fascinated by the history of these things – and by the mythological antecedents of our present populist versions of the signs. History and myth adds depth. That depth shows the depth of our projections. We have projected meaning onto the environment around us, including the stars. If astrology is a map of who we are not, which is how I see it, then these are the ideas we have to untangle ourselves from, in order to come back to the pure potent space that is our essence.
