 The Rave

I’ve been wondering why it’s taken me so long to get this next Blog up and running. I just realised it’s because I am having an Astrological crisis. I love writing my columns so there’s no crisis there. It’s in how I practise astrology with the people who come to me for sessions. I was trained in an experiential form of Astrology that is all about getting in boots and all, using Gestalt, Voice, Dialogue, Psychodrama, Energy Work and more to get a real live hang of what each part of your chart feels like and means. It is hands on, necessitates a journey into feelings, sensations, intense personal reflection and above all awareness. It doesn’t involve me telling those friends who come for a session what everything means. It involves setting up a situation where one finds out for oneself. It’s juicy and it’s real.

I am forever frustrated by how heady and academic Astrology becomes. In it’s intellectual form it becomes a tool for avoiding, or rationalising what’s going on in one’s life rather than being a tool for unlocking blocked emotions and bringing gorgeous new insights out of the dark. And here’s the crisis. I have managed to slip back in to giving talking sessions over the last ten years since I have been in Brisbane. Having found the whole process of explaining what Experiential Astrology is too painstaking, I have been giving people what they say they want – merely talking them through their charts or transits or whatever. I have learned the art of telling a good story, and hopefully telling a transformational story – but that part of me that craves the next step, feels parched and starved. So – what to do?

I reckon it’s time to get back on track with what I love most about these lovely pesky stars. So that means it’s time to invite whoever wants to come, to contact me and take up the invitation to explore who they are, using Experiential Astrology as our mode of travel. If you are not in Brisbane or nearby, I can travel. All I need is enough people who want to play to make it worthwhile. Group work is possible where individual or couples sessions aren’t.

Considering that this is me trying to educate and inform for now I am open to bartering as well as cash payment. Payment has a lot to do with how deep the appreciation goes, so one way or another it is part of the deal. I look forward to seeing who jumps out of the woodwork.

Love and fun

A Book Signing, Lions and the Big Smoke

Posted in Astrology, Music, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on November 26, 2009 by sudhirastropoetica

This week is my first ever book signing. It is at Mary Ryans in Milton (Brisbane) from 11am on this Saturday November 28th. Get yourself down there. I’ll be practising the art of my signature and short written one-liners all day today.

Getting a book out and about in the world is quite an adventure. Having just done a massive mail-out to all the ex-subscribers of my ex-website, and having delivered all the clues of bookshops I know around this country to my publisher I now feel like a fisherman who has cast his line and now gets to wait – whilst telling tall stories to whoever will listen. All the details about how to buy the book, wherever you are around the globe, are below in this blog.

I am intrigued by the relationship of Astrology to the place of No-mind, Zen, Dhyan, Witnessing, whatever you want to call it, that is at the very heart of my quest. Astrology is a description of the wheel and how to navigate it. Witnessing is the hub. Astrology only works for me when it is an aid to resting at the centre of the wheel. It seems that there is a way to use astrology so that it becomes a working description of the nature of the wheel, an opportunity to make peace with one’s foibles, and hence have an easy passage to the miracle of centering. Without the wheel there would be no sense of what the centre could be. Without the centre, the wheel wouldn’t exist. To define a genuinely holistic version of the stars in this lifetime seems to be one of my tasks. Finally I really feel like taking it on. Then there is of course also the band…..

I just got back from playing with Lion Island in the Grand Finals of the Tooheys Uncharted competition. 2,000 bands entered and we made it to the last three. That’s pretty damn amazing. I am glad we didn’t win. I could see a potential pact with the devil looming there. We did however have a great time playing at The Annandale Hotel using fantastic equipment, in front of a bunch of music industry personages. It is always so much fun to play. Definitely one of our best gigs. There is a recording of it in existence. Who knows it might make it into circulation. I’ve only heard little bits but it sounded pretty good.

We travelled well. Airports and taxi transfers and hotel rooms and lots of luggage and eight fellow lions to yabber on to at all hours of the day and night in the big smoke of Sydney. If this becomes a lifestyle it could become a source of much writing. Lord knows what it will do to my stars. It’s not all glory that’s for sure. Fun nevertheless. And what a blast to get to play this wild and wonderful music in a great band in my pre-dotage years.

We are playing three gigs in three days this weekend if you happen to be in Brisvegas. Friday night supporting The Gin Club at The Zoo (We’re on at 8.50), Saturday Night at The Troubadour, not sure what time we are on (Check out The Troubadour website) and at 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon in the park behind the Ithaca swimming pool in Paddington (Opposite Suncorp Stadium). Be there.

Zoo and Sniffles

It’s sunday night. Was it really only Friday night that Lion Island played the Zoo? How amazing it is to be on a stage where i’ve seen people perform that I am seriously gobsmacked by. I am remembering Don Walker – my favourite Australian songwriter by a country mile. Who else writes stories like that? His solo stuff is peerless. Really it was so much fun to play. The sound was amazing. Nine of us, making one hell of a huge racket for a bunch of fiddlers and pluckers and thumpers and warblers. The crowd loved it – and I got a cold. The first tragedy of my just slightly post mid-life rock and roll lifestyle. Could be worse. Being sick is an opportunity to lie in bed and read. And talk into a tape recorder – doing an astrology reading. For far away people I do such things. It’s a daunting task. No-one there to interact with. Just a voice echoed by an empty room reverberating with whatever I do or don’t understand about the stars. Each time I tell the story of a Greek myth or rattle on about the psychology of essence, I am talking to myself. Engraving the message a little deeper into the copper plate of my soul. I’m editing some old songs as I write this. To what end I don’t know. Songs, gifts of the gods and the sweat glands. How come they become such treasured possessions? Like holding on to reflections on the surface of a lake. The creative process demands total emotional engagement. The message of Cancer, recurring again and again as the hypothetical sun weaves it’s way through the stars of the crab. The real sun is of course travelling through Gemini – but hey we won’t go there right now. Unless of course you want to…..
